Earlier work had upgraded the interior and exterior of the school. In this project we installed monkey bars and a jungle gym. The combination makes for a world of difference in how the students experience their school. The children were intrigued by the equipment, but it didn't take them long to learn how to use the playground!

At Lesedi Preschool we painted walls, added murals and installed shelves, tables, chairs and hanging racks for backpacks. We also re-painted two jungle gyms, the name board and the outside fence. We worked on a weekend so the school didn't have to close, and once the paint was dry we delivered new educational supplies.

Nthabiseng was a good preschool with excellent teachers but the building looked drab. We painted the inside and outside walls and hung educational murals and posters. We also built shelves, and assembled tables, chairs, and baby cribs. The school looked very unexciting when we arrived, but now looks bright and inviting.

We painted the walls with educational murals and installed shelves for books, games, and educational materials. Then we built cribs for the nap room. After painting the outside of the school we installed playground equipment, including monkey bars and a jungle gym. The children were amazed when they saw the improvements!

Last year we renovated Thato Preschool and daycare. This year we installed a jungle gym to encourage gross motor skill development. We also put in a rainwater catchment system of gutters, pipes and a storage tank. It will reduce the need to carry water from a centralized distribution point. TGUP volunteers helped with the work.

Celebrating solidarity
TGUP provided a water cistern and emergency supplies to SOPUDEP School in Port-au-Prince after the earthquake in 2010, and this year we raised the funds necessary to buy the 100 desks they needed so that everyone could have their own. The school serves more than 500 students in one of the poorest districts of the city.

High up in the Himalayas, Dolpa can only be reached on foot (11 days hiking from the nearest road). The community has about 1,200 births a year but had no maternal health services available. Now that the Dho Birthing Center has been completed, they now have basic obstetric care in a clean, warm, and safe environment.

Students at three California schools collected 500 pounds of LEGOs. School-sized sets of the LEGOs were sent to TGUP-supported schools in Mexico, Nicaragua, Haiti, Malawi, and South Africa. The children love them because they are fun, and the teachers love them because they promote the students' creativity and fine motor skills.

We sent 500 new library-grade Spanish language books to the Proyecto Itzaes literacy cooperative in Yucatan, Mexico. The 6,500 people in the area only spoke Toltec so were very limited in their work and trading options. Thanks to the Latino Student Union at Los Altos High they can now read and speak both Toltec and Spanish.

It replaced a wooden coffee bean storage shed that had been their only classroom, and wasn't available during the coffee harvest season. Gakawa School is in a very poor area near Nanyuki in Central Kenya, where the community survives on subsistence farming. The old buildings were made of wood and corrugated metal, and leaked when it rained. We built a weather-proof computer lab so students can become computer literate, connect with the world, and get better jobs.

Kiini Secondary School did not have its own latrines so they had been using the facilities of a local church. This was causing conflict between the school and the church, and the students lost valuable learning time going between the buildings. Mureru School's 207 students are among the poorest in the country. The 45 freshmen had been learning in a room with porous timber walls and a dirt floor. The Bunga village school and community learning center was dilapidated, falling down, and unable to be used. The 3,000 families in the area live in single-room bamboo huts with dirt floors and are almost 100% illiterate. The children at the orphanage in Nanyuki were well cared for, but needed protein and calcium in their diet. We bought 2 milk cows for them. The cows will produce milk for eight years and have been bred so the cycle can continue indefinitely. The 120 orphans now have a balanced diet with milk every day for $2 per child per year!

A new 25’ x 25’ stone classroom was built at Naro Moru Mixed Day School in Naro Moru. The classroom improved the school’s ability to serve the poorest students in the district. From this small start the school has grown in size and reputation, and is now known to be the best school in the area, with 625 student in 22 classrooms.
