4 - Stove and Solar Training: Maasai Women

Tanzania, 2022, Vocation

Project #226 of 413

Working with our Tanzanian partner, ten Maasai women were trained to be expert stove installers. In the weeks to follow, 100 homes received the smoke-removing stoves. For most of the women, this is the first paying job they have ever (or will ever) have. Their status within their families and the community is uplifted.

Tanzania, 2022, Health

Project #246 of 413

This is 1 of 3 projects to support the Maasai in Tanzania. Funded separately, 10 Maasai women were trained to install clean burning stoves and solar microgrids. These microgrids provide electricity in the huts where the Maasai live. This allows for activities inside the huts after dark and protects livestock from predators.

14 - Maasai Children: Deworming

Tanzania, 2023, Health

Project #292 of 413

We provided deworming medication to 3,000 children in the Loibor-Siret region of Tanzania. Schistosomiasis, or “snail fever,” afflicts 250 million people annually, causing anemia, malnutrition, stunting, and impaired intellectual development. It comes from drinking infected freshwater and is common in areas with poor sanitation.

Tanzania, 2023, Health

Project #299 of 413

40 smoke-reducing stoves were installed by trained Maasai women. Typically, this is the first and only paying job they will ever have. The stoves offer the recipients many benefits, including saving time fetching wood, removing over 90% of the smoke from the homes, and preventing illness due to smoke inhalation and burns.

16 - Stoves for Maasai families: Stoves: Phase 4

Tanzania, 2023, Health

Project #302 of 413

Traditionally, Maasai women cook with an open fire in an unventilated hut made of sticks and mud. This is not only dangerous but unhealthy. 25 children per 1,000 die before the age of 5 from lung problems. We funded 60 low-smoke ventilated stoves for Maasai homes. The stoves are insulated and the chimneys expel the smoke.
