1 - Memeng: Birthing Center

Working with One Heart Worldwide, we refurbished an existing health post into a fully functioning birthing center, It is 8 hours from the nearest hospital using a 4-wheel drive vehicle on a difficult dirt road. The total catchment population of this health facility is 4,167 and we expect about 180 pregnancies per year.

2 - Dang Sewing Center: Sewing Center

Working with the Little Sisters Fund and the Nepal Women Community Service Center, TGUP funded the setup costs for a sewing center for the purpose of producing Save a Girl kits of washable, reusable, sanitary supplies. The sewing center will be self-sustaining by also making and selling school uniforms, etc.

3 - Villa Japon: Learning Resource Center

This Learning Resource Center offers reading, dance classes, tutoring, crafts, games, drawing, computer classes, library services, a sanitation campaign, and sports. This fun learning environment builds self-esteem, reinforces academic education, stimulates creativity, and a sense of community, all in a safe environment.

4 - Karat School: Electricity

Karat School in the Ivory Coast did not have running water or electricity. TGUP funded the installation of electricity to the school. Now that electricity is installed, the school will serve over 500 children on a weekly basis, with homework support, computer classes, and nutrition supplement programs.

5 - Karat School: Water

TGUP installed a pump and piping to bring water to the Karat school's 500 children. With running water, a daily meal can be cooked for the children, and they are able to wash their hands, improving hygiene and reducing illness. In addition, water-based science lessons are taught and the school planted their first ever garden.

6 - Setidevi School: Library

TGUP, in partnership with the Little Sister's Fund, funded the construction of a new room to be used as a library at the Setidevi Secondary School. The school currently has 205 students and 21 staff. The school has three buildings on its own land and this library was an addition to an existing building.

7 - Chunadevi Yard: Playground

TGUP funded the construction of both an assembly area and a playground for the Chunadevi Secondary School. The school has over 800 students in grades 1-10. Previously, the students had no place to gather other than a dirt yard.

8 - Ngungu Secondary School: Classroom

TGUP funded the construction of a new classroom for the Ngungu secondary school in Kirinyaga. The school has more than 200 students but lacked sufficient classroom space. Before the classroom was built, many of the students ended up having class in a space that is also used as a dining room or outside in a field.

9 - Ngungu Secondary School: Water

The Ngungu Secondary School had no running water so gutters were installed on the new classroom and a 5000 liter tank was put in place to capture water from the gutters. This will provide water to the school for cooking, cleaning and irrigating a garden.

10 - Ngungu Secondary School: Desks

We bought 30 desks and chairs for the new classroom at Ngungu School. The desks include storage space for the students’ school supplies and were made to order by a local craftsman. They are expected to last more than 10 years, serving hundreds of students.

11 - Piedra Community: Potable Water

TGUP funded the construction of a centralized gravity supply and distribution potable water system for the community of Piedra, serving households with metered connections. Additionally, training was provided for the majority of Piedra’s community members on water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) topics.

With our partner, Green Empowerment, we installed a well, filtration system, piping and a new distribution infrastructure so that the people in San Salvador would have potable water. We also constructed 15 composting latrines for the community of 540 people.

13 - Bali Phase 4: Latrines

Working with East Bali Poverty Project, we funded 21 latrines for 33 families in the Belong hamlet. There are 131 people from 33 families including 53 children aged 0-16: 14 aged 0-5, 23 aged 6-12 and 16 aged 13-16. These latrines insulate the water supply from E.coli, preventing sickness.

14 - Save a Girl Nepal 2019: Save a Girl NP 19

Since the TGUP-funded sewing center in Dang opened in January, hundreds of washable sanitary supplies have been distributed to girls in the surrounding areas. The recipients have also been given education on female biology and feminine hygiene as well as information on the use and care of their washable sanitary kits.

15 - School Sports: Soccer Uniforms

Uniforms for boys' and girls' soccer, handball, volleyball and baseball teams were donated 1,000 students at underfunded schools near Nyeri, Kirinyaga, and the Kibera Slums of Nairobi. American student TGUP travelers also gave uniforms and equipment to the schools for use in PE classes and played along with the local children.

16 - Beehives 2019: Agriculture

Project #121 of 403

12 beehives were manufactured and installed at the Ngungu Primary and Secondary schools. They will provide honey for food and for selling, and the bees will act as pollinators for the kitchen gardens at the schools and for the surrounding coffee bushes on which the community of 500+ depends for their income.

17 - Bhanu School: Science Lab

TGUP equipped a room at the Bhanu Sanskrit School in Tanahum to be used for practical science instruction. The school has 240 students in grades 1-10 with 18 dedicated teaching staff. The national science curriculum is taught in grades 6-10 to 200 students, but they had no facilities for practical lab work.

18 - Chunadevi School: Retaining Wall

The monsoon rains caused multiple landslides at the Chunadevi school in Nagarkot. Both classrooms and the newly-installed courtyard were at risk. The Rotary and Nepal Army helped secure the classrooms. This project reinforced the hillside with stone and cement to preserve the courtyard.

19 - Karat School: Save a Girl IC

TGUP’s Ivory Coast partner, Karat School Project, celebrated International Girls’ Day by hosting a conference in Abidjan for local girls. The purpose was to encourage girls to stay in, and finish, school. Only 2% of Ivory Coast girls finish high school. TGUP provided 300 Save a Girl kits to donate to the girls who attended.

The TGUP funded sewing center in Nyeri continues to produce Save a Girl kits. In 2019, TGUP funded over 4,500 kits in Kenya, and distributed them free of charge to girls in 40 different schools and women’s groups. Each distribution also includes education on the use of the kits, self-defense, and menstrual health.
