TGUP: Completed Projects in 2015
14 Completed Projects in 2015

1 - eGardens Project: Agriculture

Kenya, 2015, Nutrition

Project #54 of 413

TGUP installed a rainwater catchment and drip irrigation system at a model agricultural education school — the Nanyuki Day School. The resulting conservation of rainwater resulted in a 500% increase in crop yields: cabbages that had been growing the size of baseballs were now growing to be the size of soccer balls.

2 - Kiwanis Eliminate Project: Vaccinations

Multiple Countries, 2015, Health

Project #55 of 413

We worked with Key Club International and UNICEF to help eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus from the world by providing three vaccinations costing $1.80 to pregnant women in multiple countries. More than 3,600 mothers and babies received the series of 3 vaccinations that prevented tetanus, thanks to this project.

3 - Nthabiseng Preschool: Upgrade

South Africa, 2015, Education

Project #56 of 413

The 2013 upgrade allowed the school to expand enrollment. This time, we renovated a second building including interior and exterior painting and decorating with educational murals. We built shelves and assembled tables, chairs, and cribs. We also repaired fencing and repainted the school's playground equipment.

4 - Tutulekesedi Preschool: Upgrade

South Africa, 2015, Education

Project #57 of 413

We painted walls, added murals, hung educational posters, and built shelves for books and games. We also donated educational supplies. Outside, we installed a water catchment system with gutters, pipes and a large water storage tank. We also donated and installed a set of monkey bars and a jungle gym in the playground.

5 - Dineo Preschool: Upgrade

South Africa, 2015, Education

Project #58 of 413

Dineo Preschool needed a major renovation. TGUP student volunteers helped to paint walls, and add murals before we installed shelves for books and educational toys. We then installed new tables, chairs, hangers for backpacks and baby cots. A set of monkey bars and a jungle gym completed the renovation.

6 - Machachaba Preschool: Upgrade

South Africa, 2015, Education

Project #59 of 413

The teachers at Machachaba recently completed their updated certification in early childhood education and knew that the whole facility needed to be upgraded. We helped by painting and decorating all the roooms, and providing bright new tables, chairs, cribs and preschool supplies. The ladies are excited by the new curriculum.

7 - World of Saints Preschool: Jungle Gym

South Africa, 2015, Recreation

Project #60 of 413

We installed monkey bars and a jungle gym. None of the children had ever had a structure on which to exercise their gross motor skills and their upper bodies were very weak. They were amazed when a TGUP student showed them how to use it! When we returned on our next trip the children were easily climbing all over the equipment.

8 - Mvelaphanda Preschool: Upgrade

South Africa, 2015, Education

Project #61 of 413

This property is located on top of a garbage dump, but the teachers have gradually converted it to a beautiful preschool. We helped with painting, decorating and installing a water catchment system. The school is so well respected that people from the town want to send their children to this township school, but it is full.

Project #62 of 413

We constructed a new preschool classroom in the community of Manuel Piquera. Included in the project were a retaining wall, play area, latrine, storage space and kitchen. This project was done in collaboration with the community members who contributed the majority of the labor. TGUP student volunteers also helped.

10 - Emergency Surgery: Tents

Nepal, 2015, Health

Project #63 of 413

TGUP provided four military-grade surgical tents for use as temporary replacements for birthing centers following the Earthquake in 2015. They are located in Satyadevi, Kumpur, Mahadevbesi and Salyantar, some of the most remote villages in Nepal. As well as urgent operations being performed, many babies were born in the tents.

11 - Devisthan: Birthing Center

Nepal, 2015, Health

Project #64 of 413

Devisthan is a 5 hour walk away from the nearest clinic, and because they are considered to be unclean during childbirth, women cannot give birth in their homes. So they had been giving birth in the animal shelter beside their home, in very unsanitary conditions. We converted an old building into a much needed birthing center.

12 - Rayadada: Birthing Center

Nepal, 2015, Health

Project #65 of 413

We upgraded a dilapidated building into a fully-equipped, modern birthing center. Rayadada is located 4 hours away from the nearest clinic (on foot — there are no roads). With a population of 3,200, we expect about 100 babies per year. SInce opening the birthing center has greatly reduced both maternal and neonatal death rates.

13 - Bihukot: Birthing Center

Nepal, 2015, Health

Project #66 of 413

Bihukot is 3 hours away (on a really rough road) from the nearest referral center, so a birthing center was really needed. We upgraded an existing building into a birthing center that is now manned by 3 government trained, and paid, midwives. The population of this area is 6,310 and we expect 190 pregnancies per year.

14 - Mayan Environmental: Education

Yucatan, 2015, Education

Project #67 of 413

This conservation and reforestation education project will protect the forest, educate local youth, build community ties and provide hands-on experience for young Mayan environmentalists who will teach others who are interested in conserving traditional Mayan forests. It was funded by Synapse School in Menlo Park, CA.
