1 - Bahundada Community: Potable Water

There are two villages who were fully dependent on a small water spring. The villagers had to walk 30 minutes each way to carry water in jugs from the local water source. To ensure a stable water supply, TGUP funded the construction of a cement water reservoir.

2 - Charambi: Birthing Center

TGUP refurbished its 14th birthing center in Nepal. This one is located in the Bhojpur district where the nearest emergency facility is 6 hours by car (most residents do not have access to a vehicle). These centers are reducing mothers and babies dying by close to 95%.

3 - Bali Phase 5: Latrines

Working with East Bali Poverty Project, TGUP funded 34 latrines for 44 families in the Pucang hamlet. There are 130 people including 34 children. These latrines insulate the water supply from E.coli preventing sickness and even death.

4 - Ngungu School: Girls' Latrines

We built 4 pit latrines just for girls to use at Ngungu School in Kirinyaga. The old latrines were collapsing, unsanitary and unsafe. Many of the girls were no longer attending school due to the lack of toilet facilities. They are now back in school.

5 - Olmoti School: Playground

Working with Our One Community and the Olmoti Primary School, TGUP installed a large playground and a soccer field. Before this, the 485 students did not hav anywhere to play except a dirt field.

6 - Barahachhetra School: Classroom

Alongside the Nepal Women Community Service Center, TGUP helped construct a new classroom on the second floor for the Barahachhetra Secondary School. The old classroom was damaged in the 2015 earthquake and was in danger of collapse.

7 - La Pitilla Community: School

In partnership with Seeds of Learning, we built a new classroom and community center for the remote village of La Pitilla. The local school only had one small classroom made from an aluminum shed which was too small to accommodate all the children. Now everyone can attend school and the community can hold evening meetings.

8 - Mountview Secondary School: Assembly Area

Working with our partner, Little Sisters Fund, TGUP built an assembly and playground area for the Mountview Secondary School. The school has close to 400 students in grades 1-10 but had only dirt fields outside the classrooms.

9 - El Jadida High School: Library

El Jadida High School, in Morocco's Riff Mountains had a dedicated library room but no books. We purchased a high quality school library collection that will foster collaboration between teachers, conservationists, and students to develop programs in literacy and environmental education that empower young people with knowledge.

10 - Sunaula School: Science Lab

Sunaula Secondary School in Makwanpur has 300 students in grades 9-12. The national science curriculum is taught to all students but up until now the students did not have any practical science experience, so could not apply to go to university. We converted a run down classroom to a science lab so now they can get the training.

11 - Shining Star: Classroom

We constructed a large classroom at the Shining Star Primary School. In the past the school had to limit enrollment because of insufficient classroom space and children had to walk to a far away school. A recent landslide blocked the path and students couldn't get to school. The children now attend Shining Star School!

12 - Bidhya School: Water Well

In partnership with the Little Sisters Fund, TGUP funded a 21' deep water well to provide running water to the Bidhya Jyoti School. The school currently has 537 students from Preschool to 12th grade with 30 teachers. Until the well was built, the school did not have any water source so all water had to be brought in by hand.

13 - Cases of Water: Emergency Donation

TGUP had a chance to bid on a surplus shipment of 9,600 bottles of water. We offered $1 per case for 240 cases. With the help of Half Mile 2 Water, we delivered all 9600 bottles to charity organizations: UCLA Medical Center, One Person At A Time which feeds the homeless, migrant worker’s cooperatives, and more.

14 - El Triunfo: Learning Resource Center

The El Triunfo Learning Resource Center and Playground is an educational space designed to provide after school education for children, youth and adults in this community northeast of Managua. The open air structure was enclosed to provide a large meeting room, the playground was renovated, and a storage kiosk was built.

15 - Shining Star School: Latrines

Shining Star School is working on becoming a Kenyan Model School but this cannot happen without better latrines for the 269 students. The old facilities were unsafe and at risk of collapse so girls were missing school during their menstrual cycle. We installed 6 pit latrines so all of the students can safely attend school.

16 - Shining Star School: Electricity

We brought electricity to the school and installed lighting for 14 classrooms and offices at the Shining Star primary school in rural Nyeri county. On cloudy days and early in the mornings, there had been insufficient light for the students and staff to read, and the students couldn’t see the board.

The Shining Star Primary School in Nyeri has 300 students but no playground or place to play. A new playground was funded by Juan Pablo Mariscal of Planet LLC and includes two sets of swings, two teeter-totters, two climbing structures with slides, and two sets of monkey bars. The playground is behind the school’s new classroom.

18 - Kambuja Youth Orphanage: Water Filtration

Project #143 of 413

TGUP installed a water purification system for the Kambuja Youth Orphanage. The system provides water for drinking, bathing and cooking. It is the only potable water in the village, and excess purified water is captured in a tank and distributed to the local school and villagers free of charge. KYO matched 50% of the funding.

19 - La Pitilla Classroom: Desks, Stairs, Solar

A new classroom for the village of La Pitilla was recently funded and completed by TGUP. Prior to the new classroom, the entire school was held in an aluminum shed. This project added railings for the deck and stairs, solar panels for electricity, and supplies (white board, bookshelves, etc.).

20 - Pawan School: Benches

We installed 12 cement benches in the courtyard area of the Pawan Secondary School. The school has more than 1,200 students from economically disadvantaged families, but only had a dirt courtyard where the children played. There were no seats, so they ended up sitting in the dirt. They now have clean and comfortable seating.

21 - Covid Masks: USA Distribution

Headed up by TGUP's Program Director, a sewing cooperative was formed to sew reusable fabric masks. More than 2,000 masks were produced and donated to first responders, hospitals, hospice workers, nursing homes, and the homeless.

22 - Covid Masks: Nepal Distribution

TGUP's sewing center, run by its partner the Nepal Women's Community Service Center, has produced more than 30,000 masks. TGUP imported 1,000 of these masks to donate to the homeless in the San Francisco Bay Area.

23 - Covid Masks: Kenya Distribution

Our Nyeri sewing center has made and distributed over 15,000 masks in central Kenya. Some have been sold, but most have been donated to essential workers and to slum residents who cannot afford to buy masks. 500 were also sent to to the US for distribution to homeless people in San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose.

24 - Covid Masks: Tanzania Distribution

1,500 masks were sent to Tanzania to be distributed to Maasai villagers. They were made at the Kenyan sewing center which is employing all 10 of Nyeri's seamstresses and tailors, including the 5 who have been trained at our sewing center since it opened.

25 - Covid Relief: Food for Families

TGUP donated $5,000 to its two partners in Nepal, LIttle Sisters Fund and Nepal Women's Community Service Center, for food relief. Since the shelter in place forbade travel by car, food was hand delivered to those in need.

The Penn State High School Model United Nations Conference is one of the best in the nation. Its attendees funded books for the first EVER public English library in rural Biougra, Morocco. Members of the community will learn English (they speak Amazigh and Moroccan Arabic) by reading the great classics in English.

28 - Shining Star School: Windows

The windows at Shining Star School were in need of repair. Many had broken or missing panes of glass and 12 windows needed to have the hardware replaced so that the windows can be operated. The rooms will now be warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, and the students and contents will be protected from the elements.

29 - La Quebradita School: Playground

La Quebradita is a small village where everyone lives in very poor conditions. As part of the school renovation we built them a playground. It provides a safe place for the children to play and the community to gather. We installed a slide, swings and a climbing bridge.

People in La Quebradita live in very poor conditions, in huts made of wood and corrugated metal sheets. The community abuts a rice irrigation channel full of pesticide-polluted water, where their water used to come from. Bacterial borne illnesses were common, especially among children. Their new well provides safe, clean water.

31 - Pawan School: Playground

TGUP, in partnership with the Little Sisters Fund, installed playground equipment in the courtyard area of the Pawan Secondary School. The school has more than 1,200 students, 95% of whom are from economically disadvantaged families belonging to the Madhesi or Dalit groups (untouchables).

32 - Save a Girl 2020K: Save a Girl Nyeri 20

In 2020 the Nyeri sewing center produced washable reusable sanitary supplies and Covid masks. We funded 7,670 kits and distributed them free of charge to girls in 40 different schools and community groups. The kits give the girls the supplies they need so they don't have to drop out of school due to their monthly cycle.

33 - Beehives 2020: Agriculture

In 2020, 47 beehives were manufactured and installed throughout Central Kenya. Each beehive was installed at a school, farm or in the local forests. Honey has already started to be harvested to support the maintenance of the hives as well as school operations and family farming. Our hives bring a 2-5x increase in crop yield.

This holiday season, donors funded 22 Argan Trees and 6 Solar Libraries. The Argan Trees produce nuts that are turned into Argan Oil which provides income to the local community. The Solar Libraries (a solar light and 16 books) were donated to girls who attend the Mara Girls Leadership School and live in traditional mud homes.
