Every year, 2 billion people drink contaminated water. A million die, mainly children. The Global Uplift Project (in the U.S.) and the Nsawo Community Development Project (in Africa) are teaming up with Netherlands-based Sensiblue, to provide cost-effective solutions to unclean water in Africa.

The solution is a three-stage filtering system that exceeds African national standards for E.coli, nitrates, sulfates, ammonia, turbidity, and all organic contaminants.

The Sensiblue solution works with rainwater collection systems, borehole water systems, or Municipality provided water and NO electricity is needed. A single school-based installation costs $1,500 (varies by country) and delivers clean water to African children for $.53 per child, per year.

A total of 23 schools will receive Sensiblue purifiers. Their locations are indicated in this map:

A brief summary of each recipient school is below.

Ssaku Secondary School

Ssaku Senior Secondary School was the first Sensiblue installation and served as the pilot test school. It is a mixed day and boarding secondary school located in Luwero District, serving more than 513 students annually. The school is the only secondary school serving more than five villages within Musale Parish and plays a vital role in expanding access to education for rural youth. The school's primary source of water is a borehole, with water pumped by an electric pump into storage tanks. Most families served by the school depend entirely on farming as their primary source of income.

The Sensiblue system has provided safe drinking water not only to students and staff but also to neighboring community members who access water from the school. Prior to the installation, many families struggled with waterborne illnesses and limited access to healthcare. The availability of safe water has contributed to improved student wellbeing and school attendance.

Kaswa Muslim Primary School

Kaswa Muslim Primary School is a government-aided primary school founded by the Muslim community and serves 392 students from surrounding villages in Luwero District. The school relies on water supplied through the national water network as well as rainwater harvesting systems.

The Sensiblue project has strengthened the school's ability to provide safe water year-round. Children now have dependable access to clean drinking water, reducing exposure to contaminated sources and supporting healthier school attendance patterns.

Blessing Junior School

Blessing Junior Primary School is a privately owned Christian faith-based school serving 471 students from surrounding rural communities in Luwero District. The school promotes strong Christian values alongside academic excellence and currently offers education from nursery through Primary Five. Its primary water source is a borehole, with water pumped into storage tanks using an electric pump.

The Sensiblue system has helped ensure that learners have access to safe drinking water throughout the school day. Reduced illness-related absenteeism has enabled more children to remain consistently engaged in their education.

Vision Junior Primary School

Vision Junior School is a privately owned nursery and primary school located in Luwero District, serving 548 learners. The school's primary water source is a borehole, with water pumped by an electric pump into storage tanks. The school serves children from farming communities where agriculture is the main source of household income.

The availability of purified drinking water has improved the daily learning environment and provided a trusted source of water for nearby residents. Parents have expressed appreciation for the improved health and safety of their children while at school.

Cecilia and Paul Education Center

Cecilia and Paul Education Center is a private mixed day and boarding school serving 223 students in Namuwongo, Kampala. Many of the children enrolled at the school come from vulnerable backgrounds and are supported through sponsorships provided by organizations, individuals, and other well-wishers.

For many learners, the Sensiblue system provides the most reliable source of safe drinking water they access each day. The project has reduced the financial burden on caregivers while helping ensure that children can remain healthy, hydrated, and ready to learn.

God’s Grace Primary

God’s Grace Primary School is a private day and boarding primary school serving 527 pupils in Kikyusa Village, Luwero District. It is the only private school available in the area and provides affordable education to children from surrounding communities who live far from the nearest government-aided schools. Most families served by the school depend entirely on farming for their livelihoods.

The Sensiblue installation has become an important resource for both the school and neighboring households. Access to safe drinking water has helped reduce the risk of waterborne diseases among children and eased the burden on families who often struggle to meet healthcare costs.

Luwero Islamic Secondary School

Luwero Islamic Secondary School is a privately owned mixed day and boarding secondary school founded by the Muslim community. The school serves 417 students from Luwero District and neighboring communities. Like many schools in the area, it serves families whose primary source of income is farming.

Since the installation of Sensiblue, students have had reliable access to clean drinking water throughout the school day. Teachers report fewer complaints associated with dehydration and improved concentration during lessons. The system also serves members of the surrounding community.

Little Wonders Primary School

Little Wonders Primary School is a private co-ed nursery and primary school located in Kampala District, serving 476 students. The school draws its water from both a city-connected supply and rainwater harvesting systems that collect water from rooftop gutters.

The school is dedicated to providing a nurturing environment that supports academic achievement and personal growth. As with many schools in Uganda, the majority of students cannot afford bottled drinking water, making a reliable source of safe treated water an important resource for the school community.

Christland Junior School

Christland Junior School is a private co-ed nursery and primary school located in Mukono District with 223 students. The school's water is pumped from a borehole using an electric pump and stored in an elevated water tank.

Founded in January 2023, the school was established to provide holistic education that nurtures learners academically, socially, morally, and spiritually. The Sensiblue installation will provide safe drinking water for both day and boarding students, many of whom would otherwise rely on untreated or unfiltered water sources.

Hopeful Heart Children's Academy

Hopeful Heart Children's Academy is located in Namuwongo, one of Kampala's largest informal settlements, where sanitation conditions remain challenging. The school serves 236 students and receives its water from the national water supply system. The school provides education and support to children from economically vulnerable families and serves as a safe environment where children can learn and grow.

Prior to the installation, the school attempted to boil water for students, but the supply was often insufficient to meet demand. Most students are unable to purchase bottled drinking water, making access to safe water at school particularly important.

Kira School

Kira School serves 615 students from the rapidly growing Kira Municipality in Wakiso District. Originally founded by the Church of Uganda as a girls-only school, it has since evolved into a mixed day school and is now government-aided.

The school receives water from the national water supply system and previously had no filtration system in place. The school is committed to providing quality education while fostering personal development and leadership among its learners. Since most students cannot afford bottled drinking water, access to safe treated water at school is essential for their health and wellbeing.

Kabowa Primary School

Kabowa Primary School, located in Kampala, was originally founded by the Church of Uganda and is now a government-run primary school serving 856 students. The school is connected to the city water supply and provides affordable education to children from the densely populated Kabowa community.

Like many schools in Uganda, most students cannot afford to purchase bottled drinking water and therefore rely on the water available at school. The Sensiblue system will help ensure that students and staff have access to safe drinking water throughout the school day.

Merryland Nursery and Primary School

Merryland Nursery and Primary School is a private mixed day and boarding school serving 321 pupils in Kanyanya, Kampala. The school offers education from nursery through Primary Six and relies on a combination of municipal water and rainwater harvesting to meet its water needs.

The Sensiblue installation has relieved many parents of the daily expense of purchasing bottled drinking water for their children. Students now have continuous access to safe drinking water at school, promoting hydration and supporting regular attendance.

St. Aloysious Secondary School

St. Aloysious School serves 194 pupils in the rural community of Nabbingo, Wakiso District. The school obtains its water from a borehole, with water pumped into storage tanks using an electric pump to meet the daily needs of students and staff.

The Sensiblue system has reduced the need for parents to purchase bottled drinking water for their children. Access to safe water throughout the day has improved student comfort and reduced common complaints associated with dehydration, such as headaches and fatigue.

Sami Primary School

Sami Primary School is a private mixed day and boarding nursery and primary school serving 452 pupils in Mukono District. The school's water supply comes from a borehole, with water pumped by an electric pump into storage tanks for daily use.

The project has improved access to safe drinking water for both the school and neighboring community members. Learners are better able to remain healthy and focused in class, while families benefit from access to a reliable source of treated water.

St. Jonah High School

St. Jonah High School commenced operations in 2012 and is a mixed day and boarding secondary school located in Wakiso District with a student population of 632 learners. The school’s objective is to provide quality, affordable education while nurturing students academically, morally, spiritually, and socially, preparing them to become responsible, disciplined, and productive members of society.

Previously, St. Jonah relied on an electric water purifier supplied by Davis & Shirtliff. Although effective, the system was costly to operate due to its high electricity consumption, making it difficult for the school to sustain. The installation of the Sensiblue Safe Water System provides a more affordable and sustainable solution, ensuring reliable access to safe drinking water while significantly reducing operating costs.

Beyond improving access to clean water, the system will help reduce the risk of waterborne diseases, improve student health and attendance, and enable the school to channel savings toward other educational priorities, ultimately creating a healthier and more conducive learning environment.

Zaid Junior School

Zaid Junior School is a private Muslim-founded primary school located in Wakiso District, Uganda. The school serves 273 pupils, the majority of whom come from low-income families in the surrounding community. Despite financial constraints faced by many parents and guardians, the school is committed to providing quality education in a safe and nurturing environment.

Like many schools in rapidly growing peri-urban communities, Zaid Junior School faces challenges in providing a consistent supply of safe drinking water for its learners and staff. Access to clean drinking water is essential for keeping children healthy, hydrated, and ready to learn.

Through the Sensiblue Safe Drinking Water Project, the school will receive a sustainable water purification system that will provide reliable access to safe drinking water throughout the school day. The system will help reduce the risk of waterborne diseases, lower the ongoing costs associated with purchasing drinking water, and improve the overall health and well-being of both pupils and staff.

Blessed Junior School

Blessed Junior School is a private primary school located in the rapidly growing community of Namugongo in Wakiso District. The school serves 471 pupils from the surrounding neighborhoods, many of whom come from low- and middle-income families.

Prior to the Sensiblue installation, the school depended on untreated piped water for drinking. Although water was available, it still required treatment before it could be safely consumed by pupils and staff. This presented an ongoing challenge in ensuring a consistent supply of safe drinking water throughout the school day.

With the installation of the Sensiblue water purification system, the school now has access to a reliable, affordable, and sustainable source of safe drinking water. This will help reduce the risk of waterborne diseases, improve student health and attendance, and provide a healthier learning environment.

St. Kizito Secondary School

St. Kizito Katikamu Kisule Secondary School, a church-founded, government-aided secondary school located in Katikamu Sub-county, Luwero District. The school serves approximately 650 students drawn from several surrounding rural communities. Like many schools in the area, students and staff have been relying on untreated water sources, which increases the risk of waterborne diseases such as typhoid, diarrhea, dysentery, and other gastrointestinal infections. These illnesses often contribute to absenteeism, increased medical expenses for families, and disruptions to learning.

The Sensiblue purifier will provide the school with a reliable source of safe drinking water, helping to reduce the prevalence of waterborne diseases, improve student health and attendance, and lessen the financial burden on families who would otherwise have to seek treatment for preventable illnesses. The system will also benefit neighboring community members who access water from the school.

Good Foundation Preparatory School is located in Namugongo, Wakiso District, and has 523 students drawn from Namugongo and the surrounding communities. Like many schools in the area, students and staff have faced challenges in accessing a consistent supply of safe drinking water. Reliance on untreated or inadequately treated water increases the risk of waterborne diseases such as typhoid, diarrhea, dysentery, and other gastrointestinal infections. These illnesses contribute to absenteeism, increased healthcare costs for families, and disruptions to learning.

St. Annette School

St. Annette Primary School, a private day school located in Wakiso District. The school has an enrollment of 268 students and serves children from the surrounding community, many of whom come from low- and middle-income families. The school uses piped water from the national water grid, and the available water pressure met all the technical requirements for the Sensiblue installation, making it a suitable replacement site.

The Sensiblue installation will provide the school with a reliable source of safe drinking water, reducing the risk of waterborne diseases, minimizing the need for students to bring drinking water from home, and promoting better health, attendance, and concentration in class.

Grace High School, a private mixed day and boarding secondary school located in Namugongo, Wakiso District, has an enrollment of 385 students and serves boys and girls from Namugongo and the surrounding communities, including many learners from low- and middle-income families. The school receives its water from the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) main piped water supply, providing a reliable and consistent source of water that meets the technical requirements for the Sensiblue system.
