1 - Save a Girl Center: New Sewing Machines

This project funded 2 sewing machines, 2 zig-zag machines, 1 serger, and 1 snap attachment tool for the new sewing center that we recently built in Loibor-Siret. The new machines will increase the sewing center’s production and allow for vocational training. The Maasai seamstresses also make school uniforms.

2 - La Paz School: Desks

The community has a multi-grade school with a single teacher who teaches 20 students from preschool through sixth grade. The community is contributing 20% of the cost of the project. La Paz is an extremely isolated and rural community located near the southern border of Mexico. This project funded desks for all of the students.

3 - Manikaji School: New Roof

In 2010, we funded the construction of a school in Bali, Indonesia. In 2021, we provided Covid support so the teachers could continue to teach. On Jan 2, 2023, the school was hit by a cyclone that tore off the roof. This project provided funding for 50% of the roof replacement cost, with the community contributing the other 50%.

4 - Mwiyogo School: Girls' Latrines

In 2022, we constructed a set of 4 pit latrines and one urinal at Mwiyogo Primary School. There are 12 teachers/staff and 327 students. The old latrines had been condemned as unusable and unsafe. The school was at risk of being shut down due to the shortage of latrines. This project constructed a block of 4 stalls for the girls.

5 - Ndongo Primary School: Desks, Benches & Supplies

The slum community of Ndongo operates a single school to serve the 895 children. There are only 5 classrooms, all in poor shape, and the children do not have enough benches or desks so end up sitting on the mud floor. This project funded 15 benches, 2 tables, 4 chairs, and many school supplies. Our NGO partner contributed $500.

6 - Nueva Jerusalen: Desks

Working with our long-time partner, Seeds of Learning, we funded desks for the community school in Neuva Jerusalen. The school has 130 students preschool to sixth grade and 4 teachers. The existing desks were in total disarray and some students brought improvised desks to school just so they didn't have to sit on the floor.

7 - Las Flores School: Two Classrooms

We built two new classrooms at Las Flores School in Peten, Guatemala. The school has 106 students and 4 teachers. The classrooms had leaking roofs, and holes in the wooden planked walls so wind and rain bleached into the classrooms. The rainy season in this area lasts 9 months so both teaching and attendance suffered.

8 - Gyan Niketan School: Science Lab in a Box

Gyan Niketan Secondary English School and college, located in Kathmandu's moto is "Education for all". They have 1,000 students and 100 teachers/staff. They had insufficient materials to teach the experiments needed so that the students could continue on to university studies. This project installed TGUP's Science Lab in a Box.

9 - Maasai Children: Deworming

We provided deworming medication to 3,000 children in the Loibor-Siret region of Tanzania. Schistosomiasis, or “snail fever,” afflicts 250 million people annually, causing anemia, malnutrition, stunting, and impaired intellectual development. It comes from drinking infected freshwater and is common in areas with poor sanitation.

10 - Laguna Larga: Desks

Laguna Larga is a remote community near the northern border with Mexico. The school has 80 students from preschool to sixth grade. The classrooms are thatched roof structures with stick walls. The main need was for desks, as many students had to on the dirt floor. We and the community shared the cost of the required desks.

11 - Sanjiwani High School: Science Lab in a Box

Sanjiwani Secondary School has 1,110 students. The school also educates blind students in a separate building within the school that includes boarding facilities. They had science labs but did not have sufficient equipment or supplies. With our SLaB they now have everything they need to conduct high quality, practical science.

12 - Good Samaritan School: Cabinets for Science Lab

The Good Samaritan High School in Kyanukuzi, Uganda, has 305 students. They had a science lab but it needed new, locking cabinets for safe storage of supplies. After the cabinets were installed they were ready to receive TGUP's Science Lab in a Box. This will allow the students to gain the knowledge to continue to universities.

This new sewing center in Cameroon will focus on production and distribution of TGUP's Save a Girl kits. TGUP's Program Director flew to Cameroon to train the seamstresses, check the quality of their work, teach the trainer how to give the education required at each distribution, and participate in their first kit distribution.

14 - Laguna Larga: New Roofs

Laguna Larga School has 80 students from preschool through sixth grade. The infrastructure was very poor and consisted of roof structures with stick walls. The roofs leaked whenever the rains were heavy, and the dirt floor became so muddy, school was often cancelled. This project installed metal roofs on all of the buildings.

15 - El Guaycan: Desks

El Guayacan School has 380 students from Pre-K through 6th grade, and 12 teachers. The infrastructure conditions are very poor but the most urgent need was for desks for the students. The community had raised funds to purchase 83 desks but 80 more were needed. They covered the cost of transporting the desks from the nearby city.

16 - Maasai Smoke-Free: Stoves: Phase 3

40 smoke-reducing stoves were installed by trained Maasai women. Typically, this is the first and only paying job they will ever have. The stoves offer the recipients many benefits, including saving time fetching wood, removing over 90% of the smoke from the homes, and preventing illness due to smoke inhalation and burns.

17 - Kiamwathi Science Lab: Science Lab in a Box

Kiamwathi Secondary School has 540 students and two science labs, but insufficient supplies or equipment to teach the required curriculum. We renovated one of the labs and installed a Science Lab in a Box. The students can now compete for university entrance because they have the practical experience needed in the sciences.

18 - Drought Relief: Water Tanks

For this project, we funded 7 water catchment systems with large water storage tanks, and 9 were installed because for every 3rd tank funded, the community contributes a 4th. This will allow the Meru community to store captured rainwater from rooftops. It will be used for washing and to water their family vegetables gardens.

19 - Stoves for Maasai families: Stoves: Phase 4

Traditionally, Maasai women cook with an open fire in an unventilated hut made of sticks and mud. This is not only dangerous but unhealthy. 25 children per 1,000 die before the age of 5 from lung problems. We funded 60 low-smoke ventilated stoves for Maasai homes. The stoves are insulated and the chimneys expel the smoke.

A dentist in California donated 324 tubes of toothpaste, 84 toothbrushes, and 75 tubes of denture adhesive. These supplies were hand carried to Kenya and donated to the students at Ngungu School in Kirinyaga. Students had been sharing toothbrushes with siblings. Supplies were also donated here in the US to the Salvation Army.

TGUP recently finished the construction of a new building containing two classrooms for the Las Flores school in Peten, Guatemala. This project provided furniture and supplies for the new classrooms including 3 whiteboards, 3 teacher desks, 3 bookshelves, 4 teacher chairs, plastic chairs, paper, markers, notebooks, and more.

22 - Kiahuko School: Kitchen

A 30'x15' kitchen was built at Kiahuko Primary School. It has a large room for cooking, a storage room for food, gutters on the building, and a new 5,000-liter water tank. A separate project is funding four new cooking vats (called jikos). The school could no longer safely cook for the 487 students and staff in the old kitchen.

23 - Ndongo Primary School: New Roof

Ndongo operates one primary school, attended by 895 very poor and needy children, aged 4-12 years, many of whom are orphans, girls, and internally displaced children. A tropical storm tore the roof off the school creating an emergency situation. A new roof was funded for three of the classrooms including the principal's office.

24 - Kiahuko Primary School: Jikos

After building a new kitchen for the Kiahuko Primary School, TGUP funded four large cooking vats, called jikos. This allows the school to give the 487 students and staff a mid-day meal that consists of more than just porridge. Each jiko is connected to a chimney to expel the smoke and provide for safe cooking environment.

25 - Ndongo Primary School: Water Tap Renovation

The old water taps at the Ngondo community school not only served the 895 students and staff at the school, but the neighboring families as well. The water and taps were installed about 7 years ago and were used heavily on a daily basis so they needed renovation. This project provided a new tiled area with drainage and 2 taps.

26 - Kiahuko Primary School: Gutters & Water Tank

As part of the 8 project renovation of the Kiahuko Primary School, a new 30'x15' kitchen was built. This part of the project provided a rainwater catchment system, putting gutters on the new kitchen that will fill a large water tank. This will allow for water to be connected directly into the kitchen for cooking and washing.

27 - Amar Kanti School: Science Lab in a Box

Amar Kanti School has 34 teachers and 650 students. The school has been enhancing and upgrading but the students could not compete for university entrance because the school did not have the supplies to offer the practical experience needed for Biology, Chemistry, or Physics. 28 - Karatina Special School: Girls' Dorm Roof

This project removed an old leaking, dangerous, asbestos filled roof and replaced it with durable iron metal sheets at the Karatina Special School. The school was in need of major upgrades in many areas. This was one of 8 projects completed at the school, all funded by the Special Needs Children Center Foundation of Fremont, CA.

29 - Karatina Special School: Clothing Drying line

This is the second project of 8 projects for the Karatina Special School. We installed new drying lines for clothes, which used to be laid over bushes to dry. We also renovated the kitchen counters and outside drying racks to allow space for hygenic and proper drying of all the kitchen wares (plates, cups, pots, and pans).

AYSO donated 400 soccer shirts, plus shorts, socks, cleats, sports bags, shin guards, and more than 50 soccer balls. They were distributed to teams of school children who needed sports clothing or equipment. They went to soccer teams in Nairobi’s Kibera Slums, children in a remote part of Tanzania, and to children in Appalachia.

This project provided two commercial Samsung washing machines for the Karatina Special School. Prior to having these machines, the staff had to hand wash all the linens and clothing on a daily basis for the 120 special students. 32 - Karatina Special School: Sewing Machine and Beads

The 120 special students, ages 6 to 30, at Karatina Special School are supported by 14 teachers and 17 staff members. This project provided a new sewing machine, 1,000's of beads, and mannequins with wigs for hair dressing/braiding. Saraswati Secondary School in Bagmati is over 60 years old. The school has 562 students in 12 grades with 22 staff. The sewing center in Nyeri, Kenya, was TGUP's first sewing center to produce Save a Girl kits. To-date, they have produced and distributed more than 43,000 kits. The new sewing center in Loibor-Siret, Tanzania, had an old home quality serging machine but needed a professional serging machine to produce Save a Girl kits. The 487 students at Kiahuko Primary School only had a large empty field to play in. We installed 2 seesaws, 2 slides, 2 sets of swings (with 4 seats each), and 2 sets of climbing bars. All the equipment was made locally by a metal craftsman out of heavy gauge metal to ensure durability and strength. The children love it!

41 - Karatina Special School: Fruit Trees

One fruit tree was planted for each special needs student at the Karatina Special School. They will learn how to care for 'their' tree and harvest the fruit to share with the school. 30 avocado trees, 20 mango, tamarillo, pawpaw and orange trees, and 10 passionfruit vines were planted. With help from the Melissa Prandi Children Foundation, we have established a new sewing center in Nsawo, Uganda. The sewing center will produce Save a Girl kits, and other items they will sell in the local community. TGUP's Save a Girl Program Director went to Uganda to train the seamstresses and to certify the new center.

The Karatina Special School for the mentally disabled only had one rusty slide and some unusable broken swings for all 120 special students. This project installed a new swing set with 4 seats. The students and staff are both thrilled with the new swings which improve motor skills and foster cooperation amongst the children.

The community school of Ndongo has 895 children in 12 grades. There were three classroom buildings. One just recently had its roof torn off by a major tropical storm, which TGUP replaced. A second classroom building, made of wood, had been condemned as it was likely to collapse. This project built a new 24'x21' classroom.

TGUP recently finished building a new classroom for the Ndongo Community School, near Buea in Western Cameroon. This project provided student bench desks, a teacher's table, chairs, a chalkboard and school supplies. Indrawati Secondary School is a public school located in Kathmandu. They were established in 2000 and are working hard to improve the educational offerings at the school. They have 350 students supported by a staff of 29. They have a science lab but needed supplies. The school covered 46% of the total cost of the new supplies.

The Bigyan English High School, in the suburbs of Kathmandu, has 285 students, 25 teachers, and 3 staff. They did not have access to potable water. This project drilled a 110' deep borehole and installed a water filtration system to provide clean water. The school covered 30% of the total cost of this student-led initiative.

Maasai women give birth in their homes often in unsanitary conditions. These kits were given free to pregnant women. The kits includes a plastic drape over which the birth takes place, razor and clamps for cutting the cord, antibiotics for cord stem and eyes, wash basin & soap, blankets, gloves & gowns for midwives and washcloths.

The newly opened sewing center in Buea produced and distributed 1,270 kits at 14 different primary and secondary schools. Most of the girls who received the kits come from displaced families due to the civil war in Cameroon. Each kit also contains soap and panties and the girls received education on the use and care of the kits.

Nuevo San Jose is a rural community outside of El Naranjo, Guatemala. The community has a school with 5 teachers and approximately 125 students. But the school was built 25 years ago and is in bad shape. The students did not have desks or chairs and sat on logs and cement blocks. This project provided 50 new desks and chairs.

Njengu Mixed Day School has 110 students in 9-12th and 190 students in 7-8th grades. Under the new educational system, they are all required to take chemistry. TGUP recently funded a large renovation of the science room at Njengu School. The school has 110 secondary students and 190 middle school students, all of whom are required to take chemistry. This project funded much needed stools and work benches for the lab. They now have everything they need to do practical experiments.

Sarva Santi Secondary School is in Chitwan, in the south of Nepal near the border with India. The school was established in 2007 and runs from pre-K through 12th grade. There are 1,074 students with 30 teaching staff and 7 supporting staff. The students did not have any play equipment. The community covered 60% of the cost.

56 - Nsawo: Sewing Center Generator

TGUP recently opened a new sewing center in Nsawo, Uganda. The building has solar power but it is insuffiient to provide enough electricity for the sewing machines during the frequent periods of power outages. This project purchased a new generator and provided for six months of fuel, allowing for a consistent power supply.

The Uganda sewing center, located an hour north of Kampala in Nsawo, was opened in October, 2023 to make Save a Girl kits. They produced and donated, always free of charge, 1,433 kits in 2023. They have trained multiple seamstresses and, in addition to SaG kits, have plans make cloth bags, baby clothing and reusable diapers

With our Kenyan partner we donated 5 week's worth of food supplies for Rurichu Primary School's 171 students, many of whom go to school hungry. This project funded the ingredients needed for the mid-day meal of githeri (maize, and beans cooked in oil). Sufficient oil, beans, corn, and onions were provided for over 4,000 meals.

TGUP recently funded a new classroom and furniture for the Ndongo Primary School in Buea. Previously, the 895 students were crammed into 6 inadequate classrooms. Many could not attend because they lacked the basic supplies (pencils, a sharpener, pens, exercise books, etc.). This project funded supplies for over 300 children.

TGUP recently funded two new classrooms for the Las Flores School in Peten. With our partner, Seeds of Learning, we built a playground for the 107 students. The playground includes swings, a slide, and a climbing structure. Research has shown that children perform better in school when they are given time and a place to play.

TGUP's NGO partner in Guatemala, Seeds of Learning, has constructed two new classrooms for the Nuevo Eden School but the 146 students needed a playground. The children only had an open dirt field to play in, which was difficult during the 9 month wet season. We put in a new playground with a slide, monkey bars, and swings.

The Githage Mixed Day Secondary School had one science room but it lacked the infrastructure for practical experiments. We renovated the room and built a 12’ x 24’ extension to the existing classroom converting it into a science lab with a prep room. Electricity and water were also installed.

Mahakali Secondary School, northeast of Kathmandu, has 367 students in grades with 17 teaching staff and 2 non-teaching staff. This project installed 2 slides, 2 swingsets, 2 seesaws, a merry-go-round, and an 8' trampoline specifically for the younger students. The school covered 62% of the cost of the equipment and labor.

Sheridan Elementary School is in a rural area near Sacramento, California. The school has a high percentage of students for whom English is a second language. The entire school receives federally-funded lunches. TGUP funded new books and a bookshelf for the library since they do not receive any funding at all for the library.

The sewing center in Dang, Nepal, started with 3 machines. Now they have 19 and have trained more than 200 women to sew. In 2023, they distributed 2,550 kits in 17 different schools. The center has become self-sufficent by producing many items for the local markets including baby blankets, dresses, and carrying bags.

Bhupu Sainik English Boarding School has 400 students from nursery school to 12th grade. The school had a large courtyard but no play equipment at all for the younger children. We installed swings, slides, and a seesaw. The school covered half the cost and the other half was funded by Sofie Patzer. Thank you, Sofie!

Nyeri Farm View Academy had a functioning science lab but they didn't have the equipment and supplies they needed, and could not afford to buy them. This project installed our Science Lab in a Box. The 359 students now do science experiments in physics, chemistry, and biology, allowing them to be on track to go on to college.

Global Vision English Boarding School was opened in 2004 and has 700+ students and 23 teachers. There was no potable water at school so the students had to bring water from home or go without. We installed a water filtration system and a large storage tank so there will always be clean drinking water for the students and staff.

TGUP recently renovated the science room and funded new stools and tables for the Njengu Mixed Day Secondary School. TGUP's first sewing center in Kenya opened in 2017. This center has sewn over 50,000 kits and helped open two other sewing centers - one in Uganda and one in Tanzania. In 2023, they donated 3,185 kits at 20 different primary and secondary Schools. All girls received education on the use of the kits, menstrual health, etc.

In 2023, kits were distributed to 6,955 girls in the county of Laikipia at 44 different primary and secondary schools. These girls now have a better chance in life since the kits provide them with sanitary supplies they need to stay in school. Pregnancies are down by 93% at the schools where they receive kits.

Two schools (Jagriti and Zende Patil) in Pune, received a new innovative technology solution called "Talking Map". These schools cater to underprivileged and orphans and the visually impaired. This 3D technology and "Talking Pen" helps learn by touch, feel, and sound. The schools also receive instruction and follow-up support.

Muranga county in Kenya has more than 50% unemployment. Many families do not have the money to pay for sanitary supplies for their daughters so they end up staying home from school when they have their period. The Good Samaritan High School in Kyanukuzi, Uganda, has 305 students (120 boys and 185 girls). TGUP recently funded new locking cabinets for safe storage of supplies. This prompted the school to move the entire science lab into a better room which was then specifically renovated in preparation for TGUP's Science Lab in a Box.

77 - Maasai Smoke-Free: Stoves: Phase 5

This project funded 30 smoke-reducing stoves for Maasai homes. The stoves are connected to a chimney to expel the smoke. Maasai women cook with an open fire in the middle of an unventilated hut made of sticks and mud. This is dangerous and extremely unhealthy. Many children die from lung problems due to inhaling the smoke.

The Nyeri Sewing Center has made over 50,000 kits since opening in 2007. They recently moved to a larger facility and hired more seamstresses. This project provided 200 energy efficient clay stoves to Kenyan families. The amount of wood that used to only last 8 hours will now last one full week. This cuts down the time needed to collecting wood to 1/20th of what it was, many fewer trees will be cut down, and the air in the homes will be much cleaner.

Over 1.5 billion people suffer from soil transmitted diseases worldwide. Without shoes, children are especially vulnerable to diseases and parasites that can cause illness and even death. These 'shoes that grow' keep children healthy and allow them to stay in school. This funded 100 pairs of shoes for school children in Uganda.

Many children in Uganda have never had any of their own hygiene supplies and end up sharing toothbrushes, etc. This provided 150 hygiene kits that were given to a school child in Uganda. Each kit contains a toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, nail clippers, soap, wash cloth, and tube of vaseline. All the items are contained in a mesh carrying bag.

14yr old Angel is severely mentally and physically disabled after having untreated malaria when she was 7. Her mother abandoned her so her grandmother cares for her. They lived outside under a tarp as their one room home had holes in the walls and roof. We renovated the building so now they have a safe and comfortable place.

The 308 children at ROSA Primary School did not have the necessary supplies to do their homework. The Kangulumira Parents' School is a rural school run by the community. There are 150 students in a 4 room papyrus reed building (no latrines). The children receive a midday porridge made from sugar and cornflour mixed with water. This provided funding for one term's worth of food including more nutritious meals with beans.
